To become involved in overseas volunteering you do have to be part of an organisation that specialises in some area in which people of other countries need help. These are usually third world countries where living conditions are less than desirable. There is a need for volunteers in all areas, whether or not you are a professional, such as a health provider, or whether you just want to help out in an ordinary capacity. Organisations regularly recruit volunteers to help them with many projects, such as building houses and schools, helping people engage in sanitary activities or acting as an assistant in a clinic or hospital or as teachers.
Volunteers of this nature usually sign on for a specified period of time. It can be weeks or months depending on your time and interest. In most cases the cost of transportation is paid for by the organisation, but there are cases where this is the responsibility of the volunteer. Once you arrive, room and board is taken care of for you. You also need to bring your own money for any incidentals, as there is no pay for your services. The organisation you are volunteering with will also have insurance coverage for you in the event that you get sick in another country.
Before you do get involved in overseas volunteering, you should prepare yourself for the job by making sure you research the country so that you have a fairly good idea of what to expect when you arrive. You will receive an orientation package a few months before you leave and this will give you information about the area and the project with which you will be involved. This package will also give you information you need about health immunisations, which you will definitely need to have. Another good way of finding out about the country and the duties is to contact volunteers who have returned and ask them for information. This is one way of getting little tips that will not be included in the information package.
